The Arts Of Happiness
02.26.04 (2:54 am)   [edit]
Among the greatest of blessings is to have a calm, stable, and happy heart. For in happiness the mind is clear, enabling one to be a productive person. It has been said that happiness is an art that needs to be learnt. And if you learn it, you will be blessed in this life. But how does one learn it? A basic principle of achieving happiness is having an ability to endure and to cope with any situation. Therefore you should neither be swayed nor governed by difficult circumstances, nor should you be annoyed by insignificant trifles. Based on the purity of the heart and its ability to endure, a person will shine. When you train yourself to be patient and forbearing, then hardship and calamity will be easy for you to bear.

The opposite of being content is being short-sighted, being concerned for no one but one’s own self and forgetting about the world and all that is in it. Allah described his enemies as follows:

“Thinking about themselves [as how to save their own selves, ignoring the others and the Prophet]...” Surah Al-Imran – Ayah 154.

It is as if such people see themselves as being the whole universe, or at least at the centre of it. They think not of others, nor do they live for anyone but themselves. It is incumbent upon you and I to take time out to be preoccupied with more than just ourselves, and to sometimes distance ourselves from our own problems in order to forget our wounds and hurts. By doing this we gain two things: we make ourselves happy, and we bring joy to others.

Basic to the art of happiness is to bridle our thoughts and to restrain them, not allowing them to wander, stray, escape, or go wild. For if you were to leave your thoughts to wander as they wish, then they will run wild and control you. They will open the catalogue of your past woes. They will remind you of the history of your misfortunes, beginning from the day that your mother gave you birth. If your thoughts are left to roam, then they will bring to you images of past difficulties and images of a future that is frightening. These thoughts will shake your very being and will cause your feelings to flare. Therefore bridle them, and restrain them by directing them to the concentrated application of the kind of serious thought that begets fruitful and beneficial work.

“And put your trust in the Ever-Living One Who dies not.” Surah Al-Furqan – Ayah 58.

Hardships ....
02.24.04 (9:04 pm)   [edit]

Abu Hurairah reported that the prohphet sallallahu alaihi wasalam said, "Hardships continue to befall a believing man and woman in their body, family and property until they meet Allah burdened with no sins."
[Tirmidhi]

Ever wonder why you get sick? Why you fall down the stairs, stub your toe, lose your paper on the computer, wreck your car, feel sad and depressed from "that problem".....???? WHY????

Well, the good news is that Allah is cleaning you of your sins and preparing you for the day that you go home and meet Him. All of these "trials" clean you, so that on the day that you die, not only will the cloth you are wrapped in be clean but you too will be clean of all your sins.

But, remember to be patient. Next time Allah tries you, remember that it is from Allah and that He is purifying you of your sins, so smile and as Yaqoob told us, "Have a beautiful patience..." [al-Quraan 12:18]

It is beautiful because you KNOW that Allah's relief is coming soon:

"With every difficulty there must come relief ....." [al-Quraan 94:6]

We always complain when we are tested, but how easily we forget all the days we sinned against Allah ....

But beacuse Allah is the Most Merciful and the Most Wise, with every test that He sends you, He is teaching you something. There is always a wisdom. Even in the smallest of tests, He is teaching you something or sending you a reminder. Make sure to get His lesson and be patient- the Most Merciful is purifying you!

FOR YOU, MOM AND DAD
02.18.04 (12:30 am)   [edit]
FOR YOU,

If I have to be with you,
I need to know if you can be my guiding lights.
I came from my Creator and I want an assurance you can raise and show me the right way back to my Creator.
Will you be by my side until the end?
Can I tell you my fears deep, and trust them in your heart you'll keep?
Dad, i will love her 3x more than you...
can you choose the best mother for me?
Is it asking too much for you to give me a guiding hands that will care and teach me ways to live my life according to what my Lord wishes?
Nothing is so hard but search will find it out. Defer not till to-morrow to be wise, to-morrow's sun to thee may never rise.
Leave no stone unturned. Dont leave my fate to chances that she might learn it anyway, the teachings of Islam.
Dont play with fate flirting with non believers,
remember there is no gathering a rose without being pricked by thorns.
Your weak heart might give in and by accident gave me a mother who got no lights of "ILM" to beam my way.
Beware of inborn ethics passed from genes of the enemy of Islam.
Mom, he will be my role model.
I know for every tears i will cry, you will be there to hug and assure me of your unconditional love to soothe my fears.
I will give you joy and many warm smiles,
Can we share that on good islamic environment in our home?
I will not forget what's important to you,
will you remember what's important to me too?
With you my whole life and love to share,
If only I know that You truly care?

If you can put my future over your interests and earthly desires,
Then I will know you are a "NUR" light of my life most true.

Finally, I pray to Allah: Let not that happen which I wish, but that which is right, as I am aware not by years but by attitude is wisdom and islamic knowledge acquired.

*~fi sabilillah~*
Kindly send this to brothers and illigible sisters. One of them could be my future mom and dad....please tell them not to forget me and to remember my whispers.
Dont say I love you, rather say: lihub-Bullah - I love you for the sake of Allah

Preparing for Death
02.05.04 (10:19 pm)   [edit]
Preparing for Death
By Khalid Baig
"Suppose you learn today that you have only one more day to live; you'll die tomorrow. How will you spend your last day?"
This interview question was posed long before the age of mass media. The interviewer approached prominent scholars and people known for their virtuous lives with the idea that he would compile their answers in a book. Such a book would provide the readers with inspiration for the most important virtues.
But the most inspiring response came from the person who did not provide a wish list of virtuous deeds. He was the great muhaddith Abdur Rahman ibn abi Na'um and he replied: "There is nothing that I could change in my daily schedule learning that it is my last day. I already spend everyday in my life as if it is going to be my last."
Death is the most certain aspect of life. According to the latest statistics, 6178 people die in the world every hour. These are people of all ages, dying of all causes. Some of these deaths will make headlines. The great majority will die quietly. Yet everyone will enter his grave the same way. Alone. At the time appointed by God. Science and technology can neither prevent nor predict death. It is solely in the hands of the Creator.
"O mankind! If you are in doubt concerning the Resurrection, then lo! We have created you from dust, then from a drop of seed, then from a clot, then from a little lump of flesh shapely and shapeless, that We may make it clear for you. And We cause what We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed time, and afterward We bring you forth as infants, then give you growth that you attain full strength. And among you there is he who dies young, and among you there is he who is brought back to the most abject time of life, so that after knowledge he knows naught!"[Al-Haj 22:5]
We see it happening all the time. Yet it is amazing how we feel that it won't happen to us. At least not anytime soon. We bury our own friends and relatives but think that we'll live forever. Our attitudes about death defy all logic. In a way we recognize it and even plan for it. We take out life insurance policies. We may do estate planning. Businesses and governments have contingency plans to carry out their operations in case of sudden loss of their leaders. But this is recognition of death as an end point of this life. Where we fail is in recognizing it as the beginning of another life that will never end and where we'll reap what we sow here.
A central teaching of Islam is that it is our recognition of and preparation for that eternity that must separate those who are smart from those who are not. As the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Truly smart is the person who controlled his desires and prepared for life after death."
There is a moving story about Bahlool, who, in his innocence seems to be on the opposite end of the scale of worldly-smartness. Khalifa Haroon ur Rashid had given him access to his court probably because his naiveté was a source of entertainment to him. Once the Khalifa gave him a walking stick saying, "It is meant for the most foolish person in the world. If you find a person more deserving of it than yourself, pass it on." Several years later Haroon ur Rashid fell seriously ill and no medical treatment seemed to work. Bahlool visited him and inquired about his condition. The conversation went something like this:
Haroon: "No treatment is working. I see my final journey ahead of me."
Bahlool: "Where are you going?"
Haroon: "I am going to the Other World."
Bahlool: "How long will you stay there? When will you come back?"
Haroon: "No one ever comes back from that world."
Bahlool: "Then you must have made especial preparations for this journey. Did you send an advance group to take care of you once you arrive?
Haroon: "Bahlool, you have to go there alone. And no I did not make any preparations."
Bahlool: "Ameer-ul-Momineen! You used to send troops to make extensive preparations for you for even short trips of only a few days. Now you are going to a place where you'll live forever but you have made no preparations! I think I have found the person more deserving of the stick that you had given me some years ago."
This story speaks to all of us. We may not be kings but we do plan our trips of even a few days very carefully. How about preparing for the journey into eternity? How about making the concern for the Hereafter the cornerstone of our lives here?
Actually, that concern can change our lives here as well. This world is an abode of deception. Here we are not punished the moment we commit a sin. This fools us into thinking that we can get away with it. Remembering death is the antidote for that deception. A person who remembers that he will have to stand before his Creator and be accountable for his actions simply cannot defy God!
In the story of Pharaoh, we learn that when he saw death approaching he declared belief in the God of Moses. Before that he had been fooled by his apparent power. His repentance came too late but it did show how his arrogance and intransigence evaporated when faced with the certainty of death.
It is amazing how a lot of our own "confusions", frivolous arguments, excuses (for why we cannot do this or avoid that), or plane laziness can melt away when we visualize ourselves in our grave! Death settles lot of arguments. Its remembrance can do that too. Before it is too late. He was indeed a very wise person who spent everyday of his life as if it was going to be his last day. But that certainly should be the goal for all of us!
